1. What is laser hair removal?
A medical-grade laser targets hair follicles with concentrated light, damaging them to slow or stop future hair growth. It works best on dark hair and lighter skin but modern lasers can treat a wider range of tones.
2. How does it work?
The laser’s light is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair. This heat damages the hair follicle while leaving surrounding skin largely unharmed, preventing or reducing regrowth.
3. Which areas can be treated?
- Face (upper lip, chin, cheeks)
- Legs
- Arms
- Underarms
- Bikini line
- Back and chest
4. How many sessions are needed?
- Usually 6–8 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart for most areas.
- Hair grows in cycles, and lasers are most effective during the active growth phase.
5. Is it painful?
- Most people feel a slight snapping or stinging sensation, often described like a rubber band snap.
- Numbing creams or cooling devices are often used to minimize discomfort.
6. Are there side effects?
- Temporary redness or swelling
- Mild irritation or itching
- Rarely, temporary pigment changes (lightening or darkening of the skin)
7. Who is a good candidate?
- Best results: darker hair on lighter skin
- Newer laser technologies can treat a wider variety of skin tones
- Not ideal for very light/blonde or gray hair because they lack sufficient pigment
8. Who should avoid it?
- People with active skin infections or lesions in the treatment area
- Those on certain medications that increase light sensitivity
- Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals (treatment is generally postponed)
9. Pre-treatment guidelines
- Avoid sun exposure or tanning for at least 2 weeks before treatment
- Shave the area 24 hours before treatment (do not wax or pluck)
- Avoid certain skincare products like retinoids unless cleared by your provider
10. Post-treatment care
- Avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen
- Avoid hot baths, saunas, or intense exercise for 24–48 hours
- Do not pluck or wax hairs in the treated area between sessions
11. When will I see results?
- Hair may fall out over 1–3 weeks after each session
- Noticeable reduction in hair growth typically after 2–3 sessions
- Long-term reduction after the full series of treatments
