Hydroquinone for Melasma and Pigmentation: Benefits and Precautions

Hydroquinone for melasma is a medical treatment for selected pigmentation concerns. It should not be approached as an everyday brightening serum or a way to change your natural skin colour.

What does hydroquinone do?

Hydroquinone reduces melanin production and may help lighten areas affected by melasma. It does not address every cause of uneven colour. A clinician should assess the pattern of pigmentation before deciding whether it is appropriate.

Why diagnosis comes first

Melasma, marks left after inflammation and other pigmented lesions can look similar to someone without dermatology training. A new, changing, bleeding or otherwise unusual mark needs assessment rather than being covered with a lightening treatment.

Why is supervision important?

Hydroquinone can cause irritation, excessive lightening and, occasionally, worsening darkening. Prolonged inappropriate use is associated with a form of discolouration called exogenous ochronosis. Treatment should have clear instructions and a defined review rather than continuing indefinitely.

Can pigmentation return?

Melasma can recur. Sun protection is an important part of management, and a clinician may recommend a sunscreen strategy that also considers visible light. Discuss a realistic maintenance plan rather than expecting a short course to permanently remove every patch.

Avoid unknown lightening products

Buy medicines through legitimate prescribing and pharmacy routes. Unlabelled products make it difficult to know what you are applying. Do not combine hydroquinone with other strong treatments unless the clinician has explained the full plan. Discuss pregnancy and breastfeeding before use.

Skin education at Pretty Skin Prescriptions

Understanding the cause of pigmentation is the starting point for sensible care. A useful consultation explains the diagnosis, treatment boundaries and what to do if the skin becomes irritated or darker. Hydroquinone is one possible medical option, not a universal answer to uneven tone.
