What is the difference between Radiesse and Sculptra

Published: October 5, 2025

Radiesse and Sculptra are both injectable dermal fillers used to restore facial volume and stimulate collagen production — but they work in different ways and are made of different materials. Here’s a clear breakdown:

 1. Composition

  • Radiesse: Made of Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres suspended in a gel.
    • These are similar to minerals found in bones and teeth.
    • The gel provides immediate volume, and the CaHA particles stimulate collagen over time.
  • Sculptra: Made of Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA), a biocompatible, biodegradable synthetic polymer.
    • It doesn’t give immediate volume — instead, it stimulates collagen growth gradually over weeks to months.

 2. Onset of Results

  • Radiesse:
    • Immediate results due to the gel filler.
    • Collagen stimulation continues for several months after injection.
  • Sculptra:
    • Gradual results. You won’t see a big difference right away.
    • Full results appear after a series of treatments (usually 2–3 sessions spaced about a month apart).

 3. Duration of Results

  • Radiesse: Lasts about 12–18 months.
  • Sculptra: Can last 2–3 years, since collagen production continues even after the PLLA particles dissolve.

 4. Areas Commonly Treated

  • Radiesse:
    • Cheeks
    • Nasolabial folds (smile lines)
    • Jawline and chin
    • Hands (for rejuvenation)
    • Not typically used under the eyes or in lips (too thick)
  • Sculptra:
    • Cheeks and temples
    • Jawline
    • Overall facial volume restoration
    • Buttock augmentation (“Sculptra butt lift”)
    • Not used in lips or near eyes

 5. Mechanism of Action

  • Radiesse: Adds instant lift and structure + collagen stimulation.
  • Sculptra: Works solely by stimulating collagen — the volume comes from your body’s own tissue, not from the filler itself.

 6. Treatment Plan & Cost

  • Radiesse: Usually a one-time session.
  • Sculptra: Typically 2–3 sessions spaced over several months.
  • Cost varies, but Sculptra tends to be more expensive overall due to multiple sessions.
